STAFF
VIDEOGRAPHER & EDITOR
Picture

LET'S WORK TOGETHER

As an experienced creative, I have all of the tools and experience that I think you're looking for. Take a look at the job description below with all of my qualifications.

WHO AM I?

Hi! My name is Marcus, and I absolutely loved math class as a young kid growing up in the Bay Area. At 11, I knew that my future calling was to become a high school math teacher. After finishing my undergrad at UC Davis, I studied some more at SF State and started my dream job as a young 23-year-old. Teaching math was enormously rewarding and also tremendously exhausting.

As a side hobby to help relieve some of the stress of teaching, I picked up a camera about five years into my teaching career, and I was enamored by the challenge of trying to be equally technical and artistic. I spent countless hours honing my craft and getting better at storytelling. I started getting booked for projects, and my video production career took off while I worked to balance it with a full-time teaching career.

Fast forward to 2016-- a tragic school shooting happened on campus after school let out, and the school was thrown into a frenzy. Police sirens, helicopters, and worst of all-- mainstream media news crews surrounded our small school. News clips and newspaper articles all villainized the community that I served daily. It was at that moment that I got my first taste of how narratives can powerfully shape people's understanding of the truth. As a growing filmmaker, I decided to do what I could-- I brought my camera to school and made our own story.

Not only did the story help our school community in our own healing process, but it also catapulted me onto a new trajectory as a storyteller.

Our family relocated to Guatemala City the following year in 2018, so that I could try my hand at international teaching, where my wife was born and raised. During that time, I convinced the school to allow me to pioneer a new class called "Innovative Storytelling." Combining my passions for teaching and creative arts was pure bliss. At the same time, I was flying back to the US regularly, as I continued to be hired for videography projects around the country.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to challenge young people to find their voice and to express it creatively, I realized that I wanted to dedicate myself to my own creative work full-time.

After moving back to San Francisco in 2022, I was offered a remote position as a multimedia producer. I worked on videos with teams of contractors and educators from all across the country. After only 1.5 years, I was promoted to Director of Multimedia, where I now lead the team.

I have definitely redefined my calling as a creative through video production. Some of the qualities that help me to thrive in this role include:

    ◦    My ability to connect with people and get them comfortable in interviews and candid shots
    ◦    My organizational skills, with an eye on the big picture while staying attentive to the tiniest details
    ◦    My appreciation for a clean and beautiful aesthetic
    ◦    Most importantly, my ability to tap into people's emotions through imagery and storytelling.

The best part is that my story is nowhere close to over, and that is why I am so excited about this opportunity at Grammarly. I am looking for a San Francisco-based opportunity where I can grow beyond the educational sector into the fresh world of tech and AI, collaborate with teammates (in person!), and bring my wealth of expertise to do something amazing.

WHAT I HAVE MADE

Take a look at some of my recent work

All of the photography is mine and I directed a team of four contractors to capture the content that I later edited into this short promotional video that we used to market our National Conference.
Everything was shot/produced/edited by yours truly. This piece definitely showcases my craft combined with scrappiness in that I had to work with what I was given since I'm based in SF and the org is on the east coast.
This piece was produced to market a new product that we developed and we wanted teachers to hear from other teachers who were using it-- making sure they understood the new benefits to the product. I shot/produced/edited it all with an additional on-site camera operator.

THANK YOU

Thank you for your time

I know full well that there must be tons of applications to sift through and it is a difficult choice to find the right fit for your team and your vision. I appreciate the time you took to consider my application and I hope we can be in touch.
